This term refers to the fact that we often don't notice the plants in our environment 🌳 and don't realise how important they are to us 🌺. Because of plant blindness, we tend to underestimate the role of plants in the ecosystem and in our lives 🌍. But what exactly is this phenomenon and how does it affect our relationship with nature? In this post, we'll simply explain why it's important to pay more attention to plants 🍃 and understand their role on Earth 🌱✨.
We as a company are particularly passionate about this issue and are actively working to combat plant blindness through our corporate programs and planting 🌟. Plants are not just part of the landscape, they are the foundation of our lives. Let's pay more attention to them and discover the wonders of nature together! 🌳🌸🌍
Why and how does plant blindness develop? 🤔
In our previous post we wrote about what the term plant blindness means. Now we will explain why this phenomenon develops. 🌱
Plants are different from humans and animals in many ways. Because of their stationary nature, they have had to evolve many tricks to survive, which require a great deal of intelligence 🌿🧠. However, they have not evolved many things that we humans take for granted, and these are the reasons for their plant blindness 🍃.
According to botanists James Wandersee and Elisabeth Schussler, plants don't capture our interest because we don't have a visual grip on them 🌿👀. Plants have no faces, they don't move or behave in a threatening way. Our brains filter out the unnecessary data we see every day, including plants 🧠🔍. We often think that we don't depend on flora and fauna, but vice versa, they depend on us 🌍🤷♂️. This is one of the biggest problems in our society today.
Plant blindness starts from birth, but it could be reduced if botanical knowledge was more emphasized in school curricula 📚💚. Neglecting the subject is an obstacle to developing a positive attitude towards plants and the environment 🌿🚫. It does not encourage students to learn more about plants and their environment 🌳👩🎓.
For Compocity, it is of utmost importance to raise awareness of this phenomenon and actively work against it through our various programmes and planting campaigns.
